PETER BURKE TD
Peter Burke represents a new generation of public representatives eager to work for their community and their country and to restore honesty and integrity in politics. Born in Mullingar, and having lived there all his life, Peter knows the challenges and opportunities facing people in counties Longford and Westmeath.
Raised on his family farm and educated in St. Mary’s CBS Primary and Secondary School in Mullingar, Peter graduated with a degree in Commerce from NUI Galway in 2004. Subsequently he joined Stephens Cooke & Co Chartered Accountants & Registered Auditors in Mullingar and qualified as a Chartered Accountant, working in the private sector for ten years.
Peter was elected to Westmeath County Council and Mullingar Town Council in June 2009 and re-elected in 2014. He served as Cathaoirleach of Mullingar Town Council in 2011 and of Westmeath County Council in 2014. These roles have provided him with a knowledge and understanding of issues affecting families and communities around his constituency and beyond.
Peter was elected to the Dáil in 2016 and sat on the Oireachtas Finance and PAC Committees, using his background in audit and tax to hold the top State Agencies and Departments to account. He was a frequent media commentator during this period on issues relating to finance and taxation.
Following his re-election to the 33rd Dáil, he was appointed a Minister of State in the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage by An Tánaiste Leo Varadkar. As Minister for Local Government and Planning, he has a wide range of responsibilities, including all issues relating to Local Authorities, all planning matters, housing for people with disabilities, housing for older persons and Traveller accommodation.
